hearing someone scrambling up the hill to his lair, the Dragon Wizard paused in the mixing of a particularly potent potion. he stood perfectly still so as not to spill the dragon tears he was adding to the elixir, using only his multi~faceted eyes to see a young man huffing his way toward him. "please, sir, stop there and wait." the wizard said gently but with undeniable command in his voice. as he finished dropping the last tear into the mixture, the wizard could feel the anxious young man fidgeting and moving aimlessly about. he intoned the last ritual words over the potion, stirred it one last time with his breath to finish, then turned to the youngster.
"how may i be of service, Elias?" the wizard said calmly. "how did you know my name?" queried Elias, then hurriedly continued; "oh well, it doesn't matter. i have run a long way to see you Honored Wizard, hoping you can help me. try as i may to understand the mysteries of my life and the universe, everything still seems fuzzy and comprehension is out of my reach. i feel as if i study and study and rush to learn, yet get no further in understanding than i was yesterday! i want so much to be wise and an adept. please help me if you may, Sir Wizard; i am at my rope's end!"
"whew" said the wizard and sat beckoning Elias to do likewise. "take a deep long dragon breath, dear boy, and relax for a moment.... yes, good. that is the beginning. now calm your whirling eyes a bit and look around you. let's take notice of this dragonfly coming toward us: she is a blur as she flies, but see what happens when she pauses..." the wizard gestured at the dragonfly and she stopped mid air. "now we can observe the beauty of her wings and see the intricate nature of her life design. she is no longer a blur, nor is the world a blur to her.
'you are akin to this dragonfly Elias. if you rush around to learn, you may miss the connection of the smaller things to the larger scheme of existence. this is mandatory in the growth of the wise, to make this connection. become intimate with your surroundings at all times and you may be surprised how much you may extract in understanding from one simple lesson. if you watch this dragonfly for even a moment longer, you will see that she knows this well. she will flit and fly, but then she alights, breathes deeply, smells the air and touches the plants, learning and understanding her own particular magic. once totally aware, she moves on, knowing and remembering this magic. become akin to this aspect of the dragonfly, my son, and you shall persevere. wisdom is not gained by one thing or another, but by absorbing it all, in a balanced way. it sounds a paradox Elias, but take your time and you will truly move forward more quickly.... now, then; may i make you some Dragon's Breath Tea?"
"yes. thank you..." answered Elias, as he took another deep breath and settled in his seat to see his world with different eyes....
taking time to move more quickly
blessings
