‹› respect your host ‹›
no one knew who she was or where she had come from, but everyone was compelled by some ineffable force to follow her as she walked. she was extremely old and went silently with a blindfold covering her eyes, yet appeared to be able to see her way well and continued on it with purpose and alacrity. more and more people joined in without a word, and without knowing why they felt magnetized to follow her. as they wound their way past hills and streams and forest and glade, each one of the people felt their senses enlivened; the scents of the Earth were magnified and glorious, the colors of trees and grasses shone more brightly than ever in the early morning Sun, and filled their eyes with joy they had never noticed. they also witnessed in awe the old woman changing in ghostly apparitions from woman to deer to fox to bird and back to woman again... yet no one uttered a sound during the long and silent pilgrimage.
finally, when they arrived at a vista overlooking a serene and beautiful valley and mountain range, the old woman reclined on the ground, seeming to meld with it somehow, and spoke:
"i am Gaia" she intoned in a whisper that reverberated in the air and over the ground like a drum. "i am the Mother Earth from whom you take breath and sustenance. all in this world come from me and eventually all return to my moist and fertile ground to be devoured and live again.... i have bid you come with me here this day, enlivened your senses and opened your perceptions, so that i may say this one thing ~ look out across this exquisite scape of the world in which you live; see it well, smell the emanations of life, feel the breeze softly on your cheek, sense the vibrations of the earth under your feet. learn to relish these sensations as i ask you this question....
"what will happen to this beauty, and to this glorious feelings you have now, if humans continue to disrespect themselves, each other, and their host organism the Earth, the Giver of Life? what can you see in that but destruction and ruin? listen to me well: it is time to find a love and respect for yourself that extends to all that surrounds you. stop destroying the Giver of Life, for ultimately you destroy only yourself, and you will find that you will not be here when Gaia reclaims and restores Herself...."
then the old woman fluidly melted into the ground and was gone with a whispering sigh.

may we become the breath which gives back life...
blessings
