‹› healing forgiveness ‹›
her coat was fading day by day. a dull, somber sheen of grey covered her where before were beautiful, vibrant colors; even her usually effervescent eyes were pale and lifeless. she felt ill, but had traveled for days through the forest searching for Wakea'amea, the Forest Kahuna, in hopes that he could heal her. she was weak, ready to give up, lie down and let the woods claim her, when rounding a bend in the path, she heard a voice rustling through the leaves like a warm wind: "you have come looking for me, Popoki. here i am, here i be...." cautiously, Popoki looked around and saw the huge figure of Wakea'amea emerging from the forest. the Kahuna appeared as if he was the forest, wearing vines for robes and wielding a tree as a staff. "oh, great Kahuna, will you help me?" she gasped, her breath ragged. "i feel as if i am dying. will you heal me... please?"
"i will help if i can, Popoki" replied Wakea'amea, "but you must work some of the healing yourself." too tired to speak more, Popoki reclined in the grass tacitly requesting him to continue. "i see you have been brought to this state by your anger" he said. "if one stays angry for even two days, one becomes ill... you have been holding on to anger much longer, and i am surprised you are able to breathe at all. you are riddled with anger at those who have hurt you in some way, physically or emotionally, and have turned that anger in on yourself and it eats away at you. this must stop or you will become a ghost before long. releasing this resentment is the first step to your healing, dear Popoki." she dipped her head forlornly in silent acknowledgement. "i realize that this can be difficult, but it is imperative for your healing, for anger produces a chemical in your body that literally hurts your heart, damaging the muscle as well as the spiritual center. you must feel it dissipate breath by breath, little one, or you will lose your breath, and i will not be able to help.
"my sight also shows me that you have allowed what these others have said or done to you alter your own thoughts negatively. you can not let go of the thought that they are correct and it destroys your esteem. in this state you even entertain thoughts of revenge, actual or fantastical, and this brings you to feel guilt. Kahunas know that every thought creates a thread, an 'aka', in the etherea. each negative thought you have about yourself or others wraps a harmful thread around you, choking you and blocking you from the healing light. dear Popoki, if you can learn to forgive others for these acts against you, confess and forgive yourself for real or supposed crimes, the magic of healing will work in you. this is basis of Hoʻoponopono, the ancient practice of reconciliation and forgiveness. this practice will help you cut those damaging threads from your psyche, and release you into full healthful breath. you have already atoned, i can see, for your own thoughts and actions against them by your sorrow and your promise to be compassionate in the future, so you are on the way to healing already. accept that fully and harbor no more guilt in yourself. now, dear Popoki, let us together practice this true and sincere forgiveness and you will see your health and your beautiful colors, inside and out, return."
so, with Wakea'amea's help, and her own diligence, this began to work spectaculary ~ Popoki's breath came back and her colors became vibrant. afterwards, as she was leaving the forest, she turned her head back to look at him and said "i give you my full and complete gratitude, Great Kahuna. mahalo." Wakea'amea raised his tree staff to her and the wind through the trees whispered "that Popoki, is the final ingredient to your healing; gratitude."
