.... let the rains come .....
she was feeling the pain in her knees and moaning just a bit walking carefully up the hill. as she rounded a bend, she saw a small girl sitting on a rock who turned to look at the old woman as she appeared. her eyes struck the woman immediately as the girl said, "may i help you Grandmother?" "oh thank you. you're such a dear girl" the old woman responded. then as she sat with the girl's help, she said:
"what's wrong sweetheart? you look so sad." "i've lost my best friend" answered the girl, " my mother says i shouldn't cry, that it was just a doll and we'll get another one... but i am so very sad.... her name was Tessie..."
"Ahh, i see" whispered the woman. "did you and Tessie talk a lot?" "yes, i told her everything." "and did you take tea together?" "yes Grandmother, every day. and we played, and laughed and sang together too."
"yes" spoke the woman. "i can see that Tessie was a great friend. you know darling, i understand what your mother is saying; there may be many times as you grow that you will have to face loss. and at times it is very good to show a strong face, and perhaps stem the tears that want to flow. but also, there are times it is good to let it rain ~ do you see those big clouds over there?" "yes Grandmother." "well, soon they are going to cry. they may be crying in joy, or they may be crying in sadness, but the water they loose will make them feel much lighter... and flowers will bloom after the rain here on the hill in gratitude for the watering."
"yes, i have seen that" said the little girl. "Grandmother, do you think this is a good time to cry?"
"when you have lost someone as dear to you as your friend Tessie, i would think that it just might be the best time to cry. and my darling girl, i just might join you and the rain, and water the flowers in memory of friends i have seen pass in this life. in that Way, we may also show gratitude for and celebrate that we were ever blessed enough to have those friends in the first place...."
the little girl smiled up at her slightly, and then the rains came and joined their tears in watering the earth...
