‹› the rusted heart ‹›
Geoff was trudging aimlessly up the hilly dirt road, kicking up swirls of dusty tornadoes with his feet. his mood was heavy, his energy low, but he did not know exactly why. he did know, however, that every attempt he made to move forward on his chosen path was met with an unnameable yet pervasive depression, and a near audible creaking of his body and spirit. he was convinced that these effects were there to stay, and that any motions he might endeavor to make would end in disappointment or disaster, as they had so often before. just then, the largest squirrel he had ever seen jumped out onto the road in front of him, stood on her hind legs, and, looking him straight in the eye, said "follow me." the squirrel then turned and scampered on up the road.
now, since stranger events had occurred in Geoff's life, he saw no reason to be surprised that a giant squirrel had spoken to him, and decided, half-hearted, to follow her. the squirrel stopped and turned around several times, making certain that Geoff was indeed coming along behind. a little farther up the path, she leaped onto a stone wall behind an abandoned automobile and addressed him again, saying,
"you may think, Geoff, that you have wandered here without purpose, but that is not the case. i am the Nature Oracle of this once prosperous area, and you have been led to this place because you need to hear what i have for you to hear... and here it is, in a nutshell:
you store way too many rancid acorns in your nest, my friend.
leave not the detritus of the sometimes difficult and painful human life and its emotions in the heart to rust...."
the oversize squirrel then scurried onto the top of the dilapidated car, quivered her tail at Geoff and said,
"that is it.... that is enough. i must be off."
she then quickly flew down from her perch, and hightailed on up the road, leaving Geoff to ponder the imminent victory over his unnameable foe....
with hearty wishes for a nest full of healthy acorns...
