‹› growing through ‹›

"Raymond, look at that, son..." called the father. "flowers growing right through a crack in the driveway! let's go see what that's about, shall we?"
hand in hand the father and his little boy walked up the driveway to investigate, two sets of eyes wide in wonder as they went.
"what does that tell you, Raymond?" asked the man as they got close to the plant. the young boy knelt by the plant, gazed at his father happily and said "it tells me that there must be some soil down there somewhere, Papa."
"very clever, son" laughed the father as he sat down. "yes, there must be some soil for the seed to grow roots... very observant of you, Raymond" as he hugged his son, then continued. "and i bet you noticed how hard this cement is and how small that crack is... and right next to the garage door, too! what does that suggest to you Ray?"
"mmmmmm... that plant had to work hard to find a way through that cement, but it found that little opening and somehow pushed on up and out. and now it has flowers. pretty amazing."
"yes! wonderful, my dear boy" smiled the father appreciatively. "sometimes, life can throw a pile of cement on you, making it difficult to continue. you and i have had some pretty hard knocks lately, haven't we? but just like that plant, the seeds of growth are still in us... and we will find a way to grow through these times, find the crack in the cement, and ultimately blossom with colors and joy and happiness.... don't you think so, son?"
"if the plant can do it, so can we, Papa!"
"indeed we can! indeed we can!" sang the father as he lifted his son up and spun him around with a huge hug. they laughed together for a minute, and then the father asked, as they looked back at the plant, "do you see anything else, Ray?"
"yes. i see that the plant must be imagining that it's growing big and beautiful, into a sunny blue sky. that helps it come true, just like you say it can; and everything will turn out okay."
the two clasped hands again and started walking down the drive as the little boy said, "i sure do miss Mom a lot, Papa...." "so do i, son... so do i"

many blessings
