‹› the harvesting of wisdom ‹›
the young woman was propped against the trunk of a spreading tree in a clearing near the Sacred Grove, studying her lessons of lore under the gracious light of the Full Moon. 'i wonder if i will ever be able to do any of this...' she was thinking to herself when she heard a sound from the Grove and looked up from her books to see a hare hopping across the clearing straight for her. the woman greeted the hare politely as was her nature; "bright blessings beautiful being" said she. as an exceptional student of the ways of Magic and Elementals, she was not surprised when the hare sat beside her and said, "thank you dear Lady; may your blessings be returned many fold. i have witnessed your studious countenance this night, and have come to tell a tale you will not find in your books." "oh yes! please do" replied the woman. "i am so full of this reading, and would love to hear."
"happy to oblige" said the hare, making herself a bit more comfortable. ""you may know that the hare has long been a symbol of life and considered to have magical powers, here is why: this happened long ago on the night of the Hazel Moon, the Moon of wisdom, which was also the night of the Feast of Hecate, just as tonight is the juncture of both. on this night long ago however, the Moon had denied to appear which frightened all of the humans gathered for the festivities. everyone was worried and took this as a very bad omen indeed; the soil would not be fertile, their crops would fail, their children would fall ill without the blessings of the Moon this night. into the midst of the chaos that ensued came a large and glorious hare who was known to live with the great magical beings of lore. when the people saw her, they ran shouting, 'please help us! the Moon refuses to show! we shall surely perish if you don't use your powers and wisdom to help us....' the hare was startled and insecure. 'but i am just a student. i have studied much, but have no wisdom nor powers of my own' she gasped. but the people's cries were so plaintive and the hare was moved in her heart. 'perhaps i could try' she finally said, and everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
"just then from within herself, the hare heard a voice saying, 'this is truly a magical night, and the Moon of Wisdom shines on you. you know what to do....' with that the hare looked to the sky and realized that it was clouds gathered thick that were obscuring the Moon in her passage so no light whatsoever shone, and she did know exactly what to do. she gathered all of her knowledge and all of her strength and began to run and hop until it seemed as though she was flying, and indeed she found she was! she continued to hop and fly around where the Moon should have been, and the clouds began to circle out with her passage. as she jumped higher and higher each time, the thick clouds followed her and little by little the light of the full Moon came through and finally shone brightly on the people gathered on the ground. as they all began to cheer and sing the praises of the magical hare, she took one last leap and ended up in the Moon. since that time, the people have looked at the full Moon and praised the Magical Hare as the bringer of the light of the Moon and of life...
"by the way" the beautiful hare said then to the woman as she hopped back to the Sacred Grove, "even though you will always be learning, perhaps it is time for you to gather your magic and apply your wisdom too. there is never a better time than now...."
