‹› the cat, the raven, and the butterfly ‹›
it was certainly an unusual sight to behold; a cat, a raven and a butterfly in tandem. but they were virtually inseparable and constantly traveled together. and of course, everywhere they went they were bombarded with questions and insistence that they tell their story. when so implored, Cat would lie down, Raven would perch on his back, Butterfly would light on Raven's head, and begin to tell of their path together.
it was a magnificent story, populated with dangers, trials and exciting adventures. they had each been separated from their communities as newborns, and found each other, lost and lonely, in the midst of a great, dark forest. vowing to help one another, they discovered a way using the stealth and instincts of the Cat, the flight and eyes of the Raven, and the optimism and grace of the Butterfly. time and time again on their way out of the forbidding forest, they had saved each others lives, and the bond of friendship increased ever more. the exploits of the three always drew gasps of disbelief and awe from any audience, but it was the truth of their unprecedented friendship that provided he most impact, and they always ended their story talking of it:
Butterfly would tell of the transformation found in accepting help and companionship from unexpected, unheard of sources. she would speak of the emergent power inherent in opening one's heart to true friendship, and the immeasurable joy of life experienced through doing so. "adore your friends" she would say, "and always offer them positive support on the Way. you will be rewarded beyond your dreams, and will find you also have support in all stages of transition."
Raven would then address the magic found in the bonding of true friends, and the depth of meaningful thoughts and actions shared. "it is wise to treat this magic with respect, and maintain it at all costs. if you do this, you will forever have the experience of pleasure and enjoyment in the sharing of this life. the magic will never wane, unless you yourself destroy it with disrespect."
Cat would then purr loudly and talk about the contentment brought by friends one can trust: "it doesn't matter what they may look like, nor from whence they come, true friends can calm the anxiety of living and bring serenity to difficult times. be a true friend, and you will find true friends. offer strength and compassion, asking for naught in exchange, and you shall find the peace your spirit craves."
the trio, having finished their story, would then move on to some other stopping point on the Way. no one ever forgot them, and there were always signs of their passage ~ inevitably, wherever they stopped, all who heard their story were, from then on, better friends, companions, lovers than ever before.
