fear and courage
as an old woman she came to the stone face she knew as her private oracle, and memories flooded her vision ~ she had first approached the stone lion as a little girl and jumped back fearful when it came to life.
"of what are you afraid?" asked the lion. "i'm afraid of everything" she confided. "tell me...."
"i'm afraid of the dark." "so, light a candle and see that darkness may be illuminated by the courage of a small flame."
"i do not speak for fear of being wrong" "always speak your truth little cub. if you do not know, say so. but always speak your truth and you will always be right."
"i'm afraid of what might happen tomorrow." "humans! being afraid of the unknown is being afraid of something not even born yet. if you fear tomorrow, you will attract that which preys upon you. take heart and stand strong in your convictions right now. tomorrow you will see what tomorrow brings."
"i'm afraid of being alone." "strike that one! you will always have your glorious glowing self to rely upon; and from now, you will always have me as a friend."
as the old woman came back from her memories, she spoke: "wake you beautiful beast! i have come to offer gratitude." "of course" said the stone lion, "the little human afraid of everything." "no more. i am now a great leader of people. they admire my courage and strength, and listen to my words as truth. thank you."
"it is indeed my pleasure. and i shall always welcome you. i have the memory of an elephant, you know." "yes; and the heart of a lion." she leaned over and kissed his nose in an affectionate, some might say brave, gesture...
