learning as we go...
the student as a young child first came to his mentor asking, "how much can i learn?" "how much...?" she repeated, as they walked a path unknown to the student. "...as much as you want." "then, how do i learn?" "ah, well, there are as many ways to learn as there are birds in the sky. think; have you learned anything to day?" "hmmmm. i learned not to touch the beautiful glowing embers. they burned me!"
"so, you have learned from a hurtful experience. that's one way, and it can be a great lesson ~ tho' not so pleasurable as one from a happy experience. also, stay open, little one. be aware of everything around you: the twigs we walk upon, the sky we look to, the flowers we saw before. not only the shape, but the infinite colours within the colour, and the bee searching the flowers, and, yes, the people watching us notice the flowers as we pass by.... note it all, and read it as you would a wonderful book. you can learn much from observation. then, of course, you may find out many things from asking questions as you have this morning...."
"but what if i find out something i don't want know?" asked the student. "good question" she laughed. "ahhh, you see little bee, you want to know as much as you may learn. it is not knowledge that can be the problem; it is what one does with knowledge. learn as much as you can. then use that knowledge for the benefit of others and you shall learn even more.... come. let's have some hot tea; but don't touch the embers." "ohhhh. i won't i won't!"
