‹› unexpected sight ‹›
"what is our lesson today, Master Maji?" one student asked immediately upon arrival. with a bright twinkle in his pale blue eyes, the wizened old Teacher surveyed the gathering of expectant faces before answering. finally, stroking his long white beard slowly, he looked directly at the student and said, "i do not know." "did you not plan something Maji?" retorted another student; we were expecting...." "ahhh yes, well" the Teacher interrupted, "sometimes if you expect to hear or see some one thing, you will only hear or see that one thing and not the truth of what is really there; thereby missing the unexpected lesson. expectation can cloud or color your sight, subjectively altering the vision . you may honestly believe you are seeing the truth, but are looking through a dirty window, as it were. we must be clear window panes for the light of wisdom to shine through in both directions. now, let us go unexpectantly into the world and see what lessons we may find with clear eyes and open minds..... well? come along."
slightly baffled, all the students followed the Maji out to take a walk in the world. they had not gone far when they were rewarded with a simple yet totally unusual sight: a Duck standing on the back of a Brindle Bull in the field, both appearing quite content and serene. "now, who could have expected that?" asked the Maji rhetorically with a tiny chuckle. he turned to the students and continued; "perhaps there is a lesson in the truth we see here. what do you suppose it could be?"
"always rest before a long flight?" laughed one student flapping his arms up and down. "a very good lesson. especially for birds and dragons" smiled the Teacher. "anyone else?"
"tolerance" said one girl, amazed at the sight. "yes, of course" replied the Master. "the Brindle must be quite tolerant of the Duck's seeming intrusion, and the Duck must be tolerant of the Brindle's movement to stay on his back. tolerance; a wonderful policy for everyone to follow in good and bad times."
"maybe they are friends" piped one young boy. "perhaps this is true" said the Maji. "and what would be the lesson in that case?"
"that with respect and honor, the blending of diverse elements or people may arrive at an unexpected yet harmonious relationship" interjected an older student. "just as we learn in Alchemy, the bonding with care of two unrelated things can produce a new and compatible element in life."
"excellent!" exclaimed the Teacher. "and since they seem so happy together, both must be receiving some benefit from their interaction. here we see the equality that can be achieved in the intersection of two unequal things. an equal exchange of mutually beneficial action. we may not know exactly what those benefits are, but it is clear that they do. perhaps it is rest for the Duck and companionship for the lonely Bull... but whatever it is, we are witnessing tolerance, respect and honor allowing the temperance of two supposedly unrelated beings...."
Master Maji paused for a moment and gazed around at the students, then said, "you have all done exceedingly well in becoming that clear window pane through which wisdom may enter and be returned into the world. i thank you very humbly for finding and creating the lessons for today. now, as you venture out into the wider world, retain this clarity of seeing and the truth of matters will always be yours, untainted and full of unexpected lessons. come, let us walk a bit more...."
many blessings
