‹› the best decision ‹›

"STOP!" boomed the Magic Queen, and the very air vibrated with the intensity. she looked around gazing intently at the people from both factions, and, to their eyes, grew larger and larger as she continued: "quit your quarreling now and listen. i stand here between two villages, both inexorably drawn to me for help against the other, each wishing me to give them the power and fire to gain domination. all morning i have been witness to nothing but posturing and negative slings of transparent arrows ~ accusations shot at each other when both are likely guilty of the same transgressions. you each blame the other for problems so you may quit yourselves of your own responsibilities and feel 'better than' the other, therefore justifying your desire to usurp them, property body and soul. i am the Queen of Fire, due your respect, and yet you insult me with such pettiness and narrow ways. it seems to me that neither village is worthy of my assistance, but i have promised to help. here is my decision: i will offer help to only one village, the other i will destroy by burning every building, crop and human therein . however, you must decide between you which village i am to help. you have until the Sun brings Fire to the Water at the end of day; whence i shall sit on my throne, raise my wand and deliver my Justice as you agree upon. if you can not come to a mutual decision in this by that time, i shall destroy both. i advise you to let go of your boundless and useless egos in this. stop posturing , remove your unattractive masks of superiority and communicate with each other face to face, on equal footing. in this way, allowing your integrity to reign, find that which is most important to all and use your creative minds and hearts to come to an understanding and a solution. go now. you have my decision: i help one village or destroy both." the Magic Queen then expanded until she was nothing but fiery air and was gone.

at first there was great fear in both factions, and brouhahas began anew. however, some had truly heard the Queen's words and took heed, dropping pretense and accusation. they started to actually see and talk to each other, bit by bit exploring the truth in what she said. by the time the Sun was setting over the Water, they had made a decision.

"well? what is it to be?" inquired the Queen of Fire from her throne in the setting Sun, flaming wand in hand. one woman walked to the edge of the Water, bowed reverently, looked out to the Queen and said: "with all honor, majestic Queen, we have decided to merge our two villages into one." the Queen burst forth with  a hearty laugh of pleasure, saying "a very wise choice! with that decision you need not my help anymore, but you shall have it anyway. with my warmth your crops will prosper, and with my fire your nights will be lit. the people of your new village shall have my protection and my wisdom whenever needed.... Ha! excellent!" she sang as the Sun, and the throne of the Magic Queen, disappeared into night.
